At Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club you will find a warm welcome and a group of paddlers who are ready to help and inspire you. Whether it is getting started, learning the latest freestyle moves, serious training for competitions or cruising the waterways in an open boat or kayak, there will be something for you. HPPCC is based mainly around the facilities of the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. It is a very active club with a large membership. We are affiliated to the British Canoe Union.

Welcome

Club sessions

Saturday Mornings 10 am—12 noon (Except Bank Holiday Weekends):
Meet at the trailers (White Water Course car park) at 9:45. Beginners are welcome Easter to November. We cater for children (9 years +) and adults and are particularly keen to encourage families to join in. The session is mainly based on the Winfield Pool. This is the small sheltered lake near to Slalom Control at the top of the White Water Course.

During the Winter, October to Easter months beginners are encouraged to attend the Notts County Council swimming pool sessions on Saturday afternoons at the Portland Baths near the Meadows to master the basics. Details from George Oliver. Qualified volunteer coaches man the Saturday sessions each week and the paddlers are generally split up into similar ability groups to work on skills, go on a river trip, work with specialist boats or do introductory work on the White Water Course when this is available. We do regular BCU star testing sessions.

On weekends when the White Water Course is available for public use there may be organised coaching sessions for novices on the White Water Course if we have enough qualified coaches available. A Slalom coaching session is available for those interested in this discipline.

The Club has concessionary rates for use of the White Water Course Saturday mornings 10:00 - 12:00, and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings 18:00 - Close.

Floodlit HPP
Even better when it's foggy and dark!

Wednesday Evenings 18:00 – Close: The White Water Course is open for a club paddling session. Floodlights illuminate the course on those darker nights. No coaches are available for this session so all paddlers must have reached appropriate standards of competency (BCU 3 star).

Thursday Evenings 18:00 – Close: General club paddling and Slalom Training on the White Water Course. Floodlights illuminate the course on those darker nights. Coaching is normally available for those wanting to progress onto moving water using the back channels of the White water course. However, you must be at least BCU 2 star, preferably BCU 3 star standard.

Session costs for all coached sessions - £2.00, if you have your own equipment, or £3.50 if you need to borrow a boat or other items of kit.

Other Club Activities

Club Trips
The Club regularly run trips away from the Centre details of which are usually carried on the website (see diary/news/message board). White water touring both at home and abroad is popular, as are more sedate trips on placid water locally. Contact the person concerned for more information.   Paddlers using their own boats should ensure that they have the appropriate licences for the water being paddled or BCU membership.

Sea Canoeing
There are a growing number of paddlers in the club who are interested in sea touring. Many paddlers have their own boats and equipment and we have access to some basic training boats for newcomers. Details of trips are usually outlined on the website (see diary/news/message board). The minimum starting ability is at about BCU 3* level. For more details contact George Oliver or Chris Race. Jura 2004

Open Canadians
There is a small but growing enthusiastic group within the club who paddle Open Canadians. The club access to a few basic boats for introducing beginners at the Saturday morning sessions. More advanced coaching on the White Water Course is also available for those who want to master a challenge. There is no minimum starting ability, just a willingness to have a go. These boats are particularly suitable for family canoeing. More details from Dawn Scott or George Oliver. The Great Glen Expedition 2005

Canoeing Competitions
This season club members will attend several events. These include Slaloms, Wild Water races, Freestyle competitions, Marathon and Sprint races. Usually some practice in the specialist boats is available at the Saturday morning sessions.  Details on the Website (see diary/news/message board) or check with George Oliver.

Club Coaches
The Club is always keen to improve the ability level of its coaches. To that end the Club is prepared to subsidise the cost of BCU training courses for approved coaches. Usually we will ask that those being grant-aided help at an agreed number of Club coaching sessions in return. More details from Dawn Scott.

BCU Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Policy
The Club supports and endorses the BCU Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Policy. For further details click here (This link takes you to the BCU Website) There is also a Junior Consent form on the same BCU page. You will need Adobe Reader to view/print these documents.

Equipment
The Club has a very good relationship with all the local suppliers of boats and equipment. A Club discount may be available when making your purchase. Take your card along with you when shopping. Boats may be tried out on our regular manufacturers ‘demo’ evenings at the White Water Course during the summer.
